Empowering through Community and Connection: The Work of ROC Trust
Settling into a new country is never easy. For refugees arriving in Aotearoa New Zealand, the challenges can feel overwhelming – from navigating daily life to finding a sense of belonging. That’s where the Refugee Orientation Centre (ROC Trust) steps in. Based in Hamilton, ROC Trust is dedicated to helping newcomers build confidence, skills, and community connections that allow them to thrive.
Building Everyday Skills
ROC Trust runs a wide range of community living skills programmes designed to help refugees adapt to life in New Zealand. These include:
Road Code & Driving Lessons: Supporting learners to gain their driver’s licence through the Ready 2 Drive programme.
ROC Incubator Project: Helping participants develop entrepreneurial skills and explore pathways to employment.
International Garden: A space where people from diverse backgrounds come together to grow food, share traditions, and foster community.
These practical initiatives not only build independence but also nurture confidence and resilience.
Supporting Youth and Children
Young people are at the heart of ROC Trust’s mission. The organisation offers:
Youth catch-ups and futsal training to encourage teamwork and fitness.
ROCvoice and futsal tournaments that give young refugees a platform to express themselves and connect with peers.
Youth camps that build leadership and confidence.
Children’s after-school and holiday programmes, including Incredible Years Services, which support positive behaviour and family wellbeing.
By investing in youth, ROC Trust ensures the next generation of refugees grows up with strong values, friendships, and opportunities.
Community and Support Services
Beyond skills and youth programmes, ROC Trust provides support services that make a real difference:
JP Clinic: Offering access to justice of the peace services for essential documentation.
Research and advocacy: Ensuring refugee voices are heard in wider conversations about settlement and integration.
Volunteer opportunities: Creating pathways for locals to engage and support refugee communities.
These services help bridge gaps and ensure refugees feel supported in every aspect of their new lives.
Why ROC Trust Matters
The work of ROC Trust is about more than just programmes – it’s about creating belonging. By offering practical skills, youth engagement, and community support, ROC Trust empowers refugees to not only survive but to flourish in their new home.
Their vision is clear: a Hamilton where refugees are valued, connected, and confident contributors to society.
The Common Good Foundation is proud to support ROC for the 2nd year, this year giving a grant to support their Youth Camp.
