Visitation Ministry: Bringing Light and Connection to Rest Home Residents
Thanks to the support of the Common Good Foundation, the Cathedral of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Hamilton has launched a heartfelt visitation initiative, connecting Catholic volunteers with residents in local rest homes. With guidance from Fr Darren McFarlane, the programme has grown steadily, now involving nine dedicated volunteers—each police vetted and trained in safeguarding to ensure respectful and safe engagement.
Since February 2025, volunteers have been visiting Catholic residents across facilities like Wilson Carlile and Kaylexcare Eastcare. Visits are typically held on Sundays, offering companionship, prayer, and a gentle reminder of the Light of Christ. Volunteers spend 30–60 minutes with each resident, building meaningful relationships and bringing joy through simple gestures—like Easter cards and marshmallow eggs.
The initiative has also fostered connections with other Christian residents, expanding its reach beyond denominational lines. With a growing spreadsheet of Catholic residents now in place, planning visits has become more systematic, ensuring no one is overlooked.
Funding has supported the purchase of holy water bottles and will soon be used for Christmas gift packs and birthday celebrations—small but powerful ways to show care and dignity. A Zoom meeting in September will bring volunteers together to reflect, share ideas, and draw inspiration from the Saints for this ministry.
This programme is a beautiful example of faith in action—offering presence, prayer, and pastoral care to those who need it most, and reminding us all of the power of community and compassion.
