Golden Agers Programme: Empowering Older Adults Through Connection and Care
From November 2024 to August 2025, our older persons programme has continued to thrive—thanks to vital funding that covered operating expenses, programme delivery, and staff wages. At the heart of this initiative is our Golden Agers programme, which supports over 30 participants, with around 20 attending each twice-monthly session.
These gatherings are more than just social events—they’re a lifeline. Sessions have included engaging guest speakers from Age Concern, Dementia Waikato, MSD, and Power Saving, alongside activities like card making, jewellery crafting, and themed discussions on ANZAC, birthdays, and global cultures. Outings have taken participants to places like Auckland via Te Huia, a lavender farm, hydrotherapy pool, and even Frankton for op shopping—each trip designed to nourish physical, emotional, and social wellbeing.
Beyond group sessions, our team provides one-on-one support and advocacy. One participant, living alone and struggling with undiagnosed dementia, reached out after locking herself inside her home. We arranged for her locks to be changed and secured mental health support—ensuring she wasn’t left to navigate this alone.
Another elderly woman faced harassment from a new neighbour. Fearing retaliation, she hesitated to report it. Thanks to our trusted relationship with Kāinga Ora, we intervened discreetly, restoring her sense of safety.
These stories highlight the critical role of advocacy and connection for older adults—especially those without family support. Our programme continues to be a safe haven, offering dignity, companionship, and practical help when it’s needed most. For more information contact Te Rongopai Community Trust on 07 8505020.
