First Steps to School: Breaking Barriers for Huntly Children

Thanks to generous funding from the Common Good Foundation, our organisation proudly expanded into the Huntly region this past year, delivering vital school supplies to tamariki from vulnerable communities. This initiative has had a transformative impact—removing financial barriers and enabling over 100 children to enrol in school for the very first time.

For many of these tamariki, the cost of starting school had previously been an insurmountable hurdle. With our support, they were able to begin their educational journey with confidence, dignity, and the tools they needed to thrive. Each child received a thoughtfully prepared backpack filled with essentials: books, stationery, school shoes, underwear, a rain jacket, educational resources, and even a cake mix to celebrate their milestone. We also covered the cost of a brand-new school uniform, ensuring every child could walk into the classroom feeling proud and prepared.

The biggest success? Seeing children who were previously not enrolled now attending school—heads held high, standing shoulder to shoulder with their peers. This isn’t just about supplies; it’s about equity, opportunity, and hope.

We’re deeply grateful for the support that made this possible and look forward to continuing our mission to uplift tamariki and their whānau in Huntly and beyond. Every backpack delivered is a step toward a brighter future. For more information, visit our website or get in contact.
